Skipton known as the gateway to the dales sits on the boundary of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, an area known for its natural beauty and landscapes. Skipton was first recorded in the doomsday book of 1089 and originally meant ‘sheep town’. Skipton is still surround by farmland today and hosts a popular weekly market on its main street, at the top of which is Skipton’s prime landmark, Skipton Castle.
Skipton Castle dates itself back to 1090, where a wooden structure once stood. Built by Robert de Romille, the castle sits on top of a large motte or raise ground that could be easily defended and featured an enclosed courtyard. Over the next few hundred years, its wooden walls where placed with stone and the castle grew to what stands today. A short 7 miles away from Skipton stands Bolton Abbey a 12th century monastery, now in ruins.
