Pendle is a borough famous for its witches. In the 1600s witch hunts and trails dominated this area, with infamous examples being Alice Nutter, of which a statue still stands in the quite rural village of Roughlee. Today it is Pendle hill which dominates the landscape of this beautiful area of Lancashire which borders with the Greater Manchester and North Yorkshire.
Since the dark days of the 1600s, Pendle has grown a strong manufacturing base in the north west of England. Towns such as Colne Nelson and Brierfield where filled with mills producing cotton which was sent around the world. Today whilst the mills of Colne and Nelson have disappeared, chimneys and traditional terraced housing still seen as a reminder of these times.
Pendle still has a strong manufacturing base, but instead of cotton mills, aerospace engineering plants provide work for many of its population. Most notably Rolls Royce has two large factory plants in the town of Barnoldswick, another of Pendle’s historic towns.
